            A nice looking piece Erickn.....

Interesting that the shrapnel zing should appear on the reverse - presumably that would indicate a very messy business occured in Russland..

Congratulations - this is how they should look.

Yes! I knew it appeared familiar....

I wonder why the ' history' wasn't offered in John's description!

Erick, please fill us in as it's rare we get a real 'connection' with these things and the story must be incredible...

That gives a new perspective on 'crosshatching' - my speculation would be an exploding aireal shell with the projectile coming through the collar and down the back. wonder how the rest of him fared....

Interesting, personally I assumed it must have come from the bottom going up as in a shell/mine exploding from underneath. I guess we will never know...

As you know the provenance of this cross, which is fascinating, it would also be fascinating to know the how and the whom regarding the recovery of this cross, and the authentication thereof.

Thanks for posting photos of this tragic, yet measurmising piece.

Aireal exploding shells have been very useful in entrenched positions - of course this is just pure speculation - might ask a forensic scientist at the local police station, they might give you a better idea - either way a fantastic cross with impeckable character.
