    Cased EKI for Assessment Please

    Hello,

I intend to put this cased EKI for sale on the Estand, but first I thought of putting it up for discussion, to ensure it is original. Please let me know what you think.

The wider part of the needle has been filed. I believed this was done to allow the cross to fit in a tight award loop. What do you guys think?

War production Souval, with Souval frame and Souval core.
Images are not very crisp, but at first glance pin seems to be stamp cut overlapping the previous cut of the same metal sheet; its rare because usually this damage would cause the rejection of the pin. On the other hand, if you want to hand file any pin, you'll do it simetrically...so without better pics, I believe what you have it's a machine cut during the fabrication, may be in a time of shortage of pin supplies.Anyway it would be necessary to check if there are machine marks or hand filed marks.
Its not a nice pin, but the cross itself is O.K.

Thank you Eklipse, after reading your informative post I now believe that the cut is machine made. I do not see any filing mark. I'm posting a close up of the pin, hopefully this will help clarify things.

Not very good image, but in my opinion the line left from the stamp cut process that you can see in the lateral of the pin in the right side of the pic, seems to go down till the very edge when reaching the damaged area, indicating the damage was cut prior the stamp cut of the whole pin.

Yes I see, when cutting needles from a metal sheet, the operator cuts each needle as close as possible to minimize waste. That time he cut too close and trimmed a small part of the adjacent needle, and that needle ended up on my cross. Great call!

                  Hi Stéphane,

Yes, indeed! That is exactly what happened with the pin on your EK1. An excellent observation by Eklipse and you have summed it up well.

Here are two "daisy" Panzer badges side-by-side. The badge on the right has a clipped wreath for the same reason that your pin is clipped: the press operator was trying to minimize waste and cut too close to the previous cut.

                  Best regards,
                  Tom

Here is an example of where a pin was filed down by the recipient in order to fit existing, narrow loops on a tunic:

The FFL Close Combat Clasp at the top has the bellied pin filed down and the Close Combat Clasp below shows what the production pin looks like.

                      Best regards,
                      Tom
