    Denazified L/53 with strange core

Sorry about the cruddy scan (the cross is hand vaulted) but my question is about the core of this L/53 pin back. The core seems to be brass with a nickel plate over it. It can't be seen from the scan, but in hand, the date appears as a silver color but the rest is brass...What's going on?
