Looks like a really battered S&L.

Yes, most likely a zink core, otherwise it had been quite rusty.

That's not rust, (non-magnetic). What looks like rust is very convincing dirt/grime build-up. Thanks for your thoughts so far.

It is certainly not pre May 1945 and most likely an S&L B-Type. There are no genuine A- or B-Types with non magnetic core.

I respectfully disagree (unless you are talking about pieces actually used for award, in which case you may be correct).

Battered in order to decive... S&L with non-ferrous core and "Neusilber" frame is in my world post war...

So, are the weights listed in the RK book not reliable? For an S&L B type non marked/non-iron core it shows 24,6 g which is 4 grams lighter and that is not including the missing ring & loop. Thanks.

I take for granted it is of 3-part construction.... Correct?

Very interesting cross, always hard to judge the damaged ones, could be damaged during the war, or could be damaged to decieve. I would take a gamble if its cheap !

Are you sure this is a three piece cross?
The dented corners look strange to me... if it were a three piece, I imagine there would be more signs of the frame splitting apart, this one looks more like what happens when a one piece copy is abused.

And if it is any help, my post war S&L B frame with magnetic core weighs 28.7g complete with ring and loop.

                            Regards - Danny

Hi Danny, I agree, it looks much a one piece cross, same metal to the frame and core...
