    U-Boat Grouping

Latest aquisition just in. All pieces were the property of U-Boat captain Heinrich Niemeyer, commander of U-547 and later Type XXI, U-3532. Posting here because three of the pieces are "Crosses".

Set comprises, Black Wound Badge ( wounded when his boat was attacked and strafed by a Spifire), EK2, EK1 (Brass centre), Minesweeper Badge, U-Boat Badge, U-Boat Clasp in Bronze (First Pattern), U-Boat Clasp in Silver, German Cross in Gold (six rivet Godet, marked "21") and his dress dagger, an Eickhorn with standard etched blade, also 31 original wartime photos of him and his boat, including the commissioning ceremony of U-547.

    AND

The award docs for all except the DK, though I did get a photocopy of that.

      Hello Gordon
Very nice grouping you have there, this would be the highlight of any collection. Pity about not getting the DK doc, maybe that will find its way home sometime in the future.

          u boat grouping

          Hello Gordon,

Very nice looking u boat grouping indeed => i do not want to spoil the fun but is it possible that 3 award documents ( namely : U boat front clasps + U boat badge ) are cut and where reduced in size ? , just a minor observation, hope to see some more close ups soon

Yes, the U-Boat Badge and Clasp docs were trimmed down by Niemeyer (who survived the war) to fit them into a frame. Didn't worry me much because I have several other complete undamaged examples of these docs and the price of the grouping was satisfactory taking this into account/

              I'll post some enlargements later.

These shouldn't really be here in the "Crosses" forum but as they are part of a German Cross group and the thread is already here, I'll continue with it.

Thanks Peter, I got them from an excellent source

DK is better than its looks here. At some point an attempt has been made to cover surface chipping in the enal but crudley painting over it, making it look ten times worrse. Fortunately being on top of glass enamel it has no grip and scraped off with my fingernail. With that and some mild soapy cleaning solution and a soft bristle toothbrush, its already looking much better than this scan

Havent posted the EK2 or Wound Badge because there is nothing remotely unsual or different about them. Non maker marked bog-standard pieces. Also with the group came a medal ribbon bar 1957 pattern with mini U-Boat Clasp in Silver, U-Boat Badge and LS Medal in Silver, so he obviously had that too, though its missing from the group.
