Please identify this cross

Hello,

I have just received this wedding portrait photo showing medals being worn. However, I cannot identify the middle medal. It is a cross with a 5-pointed star in the centre. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like the Italian War Merit or War Cross medal.

Could only speculate that perhaps he was involved in some operations with the Italians, maybe in Africa or maybe an advisor could be anything since they were Allies. Any idea when the picture was taken?
