I can not say this, because the cross is not mine. Familiar asked to clarify on the authenticity and I have only these pictures.

Drilled/reamed out. Maybe because of this :

Surely not wear ! I'd rule that out completely.

Agree! Not very likely worn that much. Perhaps it was drilled out by an over ambitious worker. Or the holder didn't like that fat ring?
