Can somebody please explain the differences between the first and second patterns? Is it just the progression of the die flaw?

It is maybe not so much a question of a rule but why there is a grey, blue, green, field-grey, luftwaffe, .black, ... cloth background. Because that there is a grey ( and other) background is a fact. And that there is a grey uniform for the Waffen-SS and Sturmgeschütz is also a fact. It is normal for any soldier to use the color ofthe uniform for the background of the cloth version (but examples where this is not the case do exist).
And grey exists because of the uniforms of the Waffen-SS and Sturmgeschützabteilungen, rule or no rule.

Yeah, that was my point. The recipient could choose to wear whatever color he thought looked best on his tunic. As you mentioned there is plenty of photographic evidence of that happening.-Calvin Hall, repressed Appalachian American.
