The reason I ask for the catch details is so we can eliminate possibilities....I don't like this grey cardboard on the underside of the base, it's associated with numerous fakes.

The '57 boxes I'm not very good on, but WW2 era I would doubt at least.

I still need a front on pic though or the catch head please.

Difficult to say, on this the catch button look okish....but the spring and plate is like this one of a moden fake. We have to careful here as alot of the East German and 1957 boxes have catches that look near on the same as the fakes..almost exactly.

Here's a pic of one fake catch. But lets not reside ourselves to it a being a fake EK box just yet. but I confess there's something a miss here...i'll have to think on this...any budding '57 experts out there ?

            Hi Merdock,

Re the cross, as it's a 1914 example, it's more likely to be official. If the core is magnetic and the black finish isn't splashed over the beading it's possibly/probably "official". If the black finish is poor, it's likely to be a post 80s example aimed at collectors.

57er cases aren't my strong point. You have a post-war cross in what I think is probably a post-war case, but whether the case is OK for a 57er or whether it is a repro case married to a "genuine" 57er cross I don't know. You're in a grey area with this one imo.

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

                  merdock.
My opinion: The cross is a legit 1957 version of the WW1 Iron Cross by Steinhauer & Luck.

                  Cheers.

Thanks Merdock , yep she's 101% post war no dilusion there at all.

Now as for a '57......well here's what I think and it's out aloud (I'm being open, so speak up if I'm wrong please do), the '57 awards in the incipient days came in TR surplus boxes or boxes tailored around them...in a short time they where evident in plastic boxes of a manner or devoid of box at all.

Judging by the catch loosley and the mech and considering the grey cardboard I can't help but think this is a possible more modern fake...even the modern '57 boxes which I'm aware of don't prescribe to anything like this....and they've been made really for the collector market as indeed most '57 awards of late years have.

I've more or less forced an opinion out, I'd like to 'wait out' on this and see what comes to light in the future. I'll invest some time into '57 boxes also as questions on these are popping up more often than not.

Sorry to be of no help really.

                    Marcus
