    An early fake

I have often heard of early fakes made of lead, but had never seen one. When I came across one, I thought that I would post it in case there are others who have heard of, but never seen them.
It really is very difficult to imagine that anyone could be fooled by this crude fake, but the person who owned it, and who had little personal knowledge in this area, thought that it was genuine!

          Hi Tom,
Unfortunately you are correct, and even more unfortunately they are producing far better ones today!

Some of my first copies were in lead. We had a shop in Columbus called Zanes Gun Rack, he sold tons of fakes, telling people "the Germans used any metal available to create badges, even lead" and I believed it as a 10 year old. lol

While we were visiting relatives in Columbus in the early 1980s, my father-in-law took me to Zane's Gun Rack. Zane did not come across as a customer friendly shop owner.

On the cheap 70's fakes I remember the whole hinge assembly was cast in one with the rest of the medal out of lead-like material ... only the R pin and catch were 'solid' metal.

They were really soft and you got dirty hands after handling them
