Purely conjecture, but could it be for quick/easy removal from uniform? Instead of fumbling with getting the pin open, it could just be slid off (and/or back into) loops sewn on the uniform.

Perhaps impurities in the material used for the pin and a breakage occurred when stressed...? Anything and everything is only as strong as/at its weakest link.
I have had several EK1s that had the pin snipped off, not bent or broken, for sure cut off near the middle. My conjecture is that this was done when processing POWS after the war's end, essentially letting them keep the award with no way to display it. Maybe this was before the denazification "decree" when all swastikas had to be removed... Good question to ask but probably no one is left to answer...
