Thanks for your replies guys. I have other questions:
1. Is it possible to find a 1st core on a late war cross ?
2. Can we be 100% sure all "65" crosses are wartime (pre may 45) ?
3. About the paint, I often see crosses with a lack of paint on swastika and date. It has been removed by someone or natural wear ?

Eronymous :
As to your questions : 1- This early marked cross is probably close to the end of the use of the first core . 2- A nice war time EK1 . 3- Paint removed with very fine sand paper .
A maker who made a fair amount of crosses it is not surprizing to find different cores . M&S EK1 book has most of them .
I did a chart up with another member here with all of them with type refferances to the book .
Alf : My own chart :

Done by the carrier of the award and mostly to the swastika usually : " To high light their proud belief in the Regime and to show it ."
On steel core you had to keep removing the rust that would build up . More impressive are the exposed brass cores with their 'golden' appearance .
Enemy snipers really loved those ones !
