Looking at these for the first time.As a general rule,are the marked ones more desirable ( and more expensive) than the unmarked ones?

As a generla rule that is correct.
For the "average" collector they are more desireable.
Every collector usually starts with marked ek's.
But if you focus on ek's, you will find out the early unmarked ek's are harder, much harder to find.
This is reflected in the price.
Some rare marked crosses, like L/14, sell at high prices, but the most expensive crosses I have seen so far are usually unmarked.Comment

Schinkle, R3, one-piece made, some brass/zinc core example, factory vaulted, are very hard to found variation, but usually in unmarked and expensive....Comment

Exceptions exist of course .
A manufacturer lets say made 95% of crosses unmarked ..... then the odd marked one will be rare and more expensive ..... by ratio .
Or any manufacturer who made very few to start with ..... they are rare and also hard to find and expensive ...... by volume .
Earlier made crosses usually will cost more - in average condition or better - better workmanship and finishing .
Also non conforming crosses by feature , design and composition will command a premium also .
