    EK1 Spange L/13

Hi Chaps, what do you think of this clasp? Looks different to a Meybauer with the lack of veins to the feathers and different pin assembly, to me it looks more like the clasp which has been described as "the unknown maker" ?

IMO a copy of the "unknown maker" with a bogus mark.
It doesn't look like an L/13 at all....

        Exactly, Ben. And, wrong hardware.

Take a look at the outline of this original compared with the copy...

          Thanks Ben,

any other opinions? I was kind of hoping this one was OK , and that I had found out who "the unknown maker" was.

That would have been nice , but an L/13 cladp looks completely different
Don't have a pic at hand, but it shouldn't be too hard to find some on waf

                cheers Ben,

I can't find an L/13 anywhere on the forum apart from the one on the collectors tools on the WAF home page

Robert is that the reverse of "the unknown maker"?

                  Jim just posted his clasp
I thought there were more pics on these on waf

You could also search for L/17 or L/56, they are all from the same maker...

Thanks Ben, and thanks Jim for posting your L/13 that's what I thought one should look like.

Sorry Robert I was just rushing out the door when I asked that question, I see now it is the reverse of the unknown maker. It is quite similar , is it not possible Meybauer produced two different versions of the clasp?

I just found an original "unknown maker" belonging to George Stimson which has different hardware to the one posted by Robert, and very similar to the one I posted. So does this not prove, it is in fact not the wrong hardware?

No, but compare the backside and you will see the differences in the claw shape. The one you started this thread with is a fake. Jim

Cheers Jim, the clasp does not belong to me, it's part of a collection I'm buying, so was just wanting to be 100% sure, before I tell the owner the bad news. I notice there is no stippling around the swastika on the one I posted too.

thanks again for all your help guys

The hardware on George's example is non-typical, of course. The hardware on the copy/fake is different than that of Goerge's as you can see.

Here is the obverse of the original I posted earlier in this thread, for detail...

The copy/fake is NOT from the same die as the original here.

                              Thanks Robert,

yes I can see it is not the same die , especially the two extra lines on the legs, is it not possible it is just a variation?

When I hold the badge in my hand it does look similar to yours especially the light stippling around the swastika and the head is the same , my badge has been scanned and the detail to the head etc looks worse than in real life.

Would it be worth while me taking a photo of the badge, which will hopefully show the details are much crisper?
