                Well Eric ... one can still see the silver plating and spots of lacquer coating on the frame .
                To the contrary that would put this cross as a very early L/12 ... before silver plating was banned .
                It has the chipped W&L frame .

                    Any LDO marked EK is (at the earliest) a mid-war EK, because LDO numbers were introduced at the end of 1942, i.e. dead in the middle of the war (about 36-39 months through a 69-month conflict). So I would call it a mid-war EK1.

                    Douglas: silver plating was banned? Can you tell us more?

                        I believe you were thinking the LDO numbers were introduced in March of 1941, the other stimed period is about the PK numbers.
