S&L DKiG stamped "4" on pin

    Hello all,

In my research I see a lot of them that are unmarked but this one does show a "4" stamped on the pin. Has anyone compared this stamp to a wartime "4" by them? Are 800-4 marked RK's considered wartime now, is this the same stamp? To me, even the construction of this cross looks dodgy and lacking of quality but it may just be to it being a late war piece. Seller states that Jason Burmeister gave this one the thumbs up and I know that's a big name in the hobby, but what's everyone else think?

Regarding to Mr. Preuss, Prokurist of S&L, he got an order directly from Mr. Döhle on 20. July 1944 for German Crosses in Gold. It could very well be that this order was fulfilled but did not make it to the PKZ (no S&L in Schloss Klessheim). Based on the statement of Mr. Preuss (made in 1977) I personally believe that the "4" marked examples were made during the war. However, it could very well be that they remained in Lüdenscheid.
The unmarked S&L German Crosses, however, I do consider postwar. Both assumptions are unproven by hard facts other than Mr. Preuss' statement.

              Dietrich,

I appreciate your opinion, thank you. Did you ever do a comparison of the "4" stamps used?

I believe the order was for crosses in Gold and Silver. On this cross, can you show a really good close-up of the "4"?

I sent the seller in the link above a link to this thread so hopefully he will.

He is not clear on this. He says initially for Gold and Silver and later on he says he got an order for German Crosses in Gold and for Pionier der Arbeit. I like to err on the side of caution and take this sentence ".. und habe damals einen Auftrag über Deutsche Kreuze in Gold und Pionier der Arbeit entgegengenommen,..." as the relevant one.

Caution can be a wonderful thing, especially with S&L. Here is a photo of one of the barter boards supposedly obtained by a British officer shortly after the war's end. The RK's are all unflawed "A" types. The pins on the DK's, to my understanding, were both marked "4". But we may never know to a 100% absolute certainty.

William, this one looks promising. Check out this thread that I repost often for S&L DK's.
