I know with fakes it is never just one thing, but my first thought on look at it was that the pin is wrong. Am I at least on the right track there?

Yes, indeed! The pin on that one is a definite sign of a fake. However, there are originals that have a similar type of pin setup that your fake is trying to copy. This one posted below is original.

        Best regards,

This is a quick lesson that has helped me identify this raptor fake really fast. The raptor fake shares a number of similarities with the Otto Schickle and Mayer spanges. The one most pronounced detail, IMO, that helps me identify the raptor fake is found on the inner wings, and once you see this it will become very easy to distinguish the fake from the real. The first photo below is the Schickle. Below that is a Mayer. Notice the inner wing detail (circled in red) on both original spanges. They extend inward on both sides of the eagle's head. You don't see this on the raptor. Instead, the inner wings on the raptor on both sides of the head have no curvature whatsoever. This really stands out to me. How about you? Can you see the difference?

Here is the raptor again showing the lack of inner wing curvature...

The one that started this thread also seems to be marked "C. E. Juncker Berlin SW" ? from what I can see and its not a Juncker design

Thank you for your detailed reply Robert P. That is great information, useful information. I, for one, will incorporate this tid-bit into my evaluation process. I realize I am in a minority here but I sure wish more posts/replies/evaluations were as practical and helpful as yours.
