Jon- What do you see that leads you to this opinion? I'm not disputing your conclusion, I'm hoping to learn from your observations. One reply with substantive information is more valuable than replies from 100 knowledgeable experts each stating "It's fake. " Thanks!

Because both the cross and then spange are well known copies.

At the risk of sounding like a "smarta**" and genuinely not intending to be one; This Is where I ask " how is it a well known fake?" To which someone replies, " check the fourms, you'll find plenty of examples. " Okay' I will... but what am I looking for!?

            combo

Do a search for "Combos" and you should find plenty. Also, do a search for L/18 spanges.

Undoubtedly I will search and find dozens, if not hundreds, of posts. However, once I find them, what irregularities do I look for or at that will differentiate those from period pieces?

                Fake

A wise man once told me years ago on this forum to study the characteristics of real ones and then the fakes will really stand out. If you are considering collecting these things, or collecting anything, I highly recommend to buy a good book, I can recommend one if you like, and study first before spending any money. Searchng the forum is free, and reading all the post, however long, can be a learning experience, if you have the time.

Here is an L/18 (Mayer) spange. Look at it from the front and compare it to the combo. Then look at it from the back and do the same thing, you will see differences. Jim

I can't speak about the spange, but the cross is a one piece cast item that
does not match any original 1914 cross. The details in the crown are the

Ebay has several of these fakes right now.

Thanks for this info. It is very helpful. Your post, along with that of CMSgt, is (IMHO) exactly what is missing from the overwhelming majority of posts on WA- some level of detailed information from which direction can be gleaned. This is, after all, a "Discussion Fourm."
