    Knight's Cross.......weird!

    Hi all,
This is my mate's RK that he has had for a good 20 years that he insists is an RK!......I have always thought it isn't! It measures 47.2x47.2mm(not including the eye ring). The eye ring is one piece and is soldered on covering any marking that were on the back of the cross(if any??).The swastika and dates are no where near as crisp as an original RK and look very much like a standard EK2.
The ribbon loop is twice stamped 800 on either side of the loop.
I think this might be a converted Ubergrosse as the dimensions seem right for that type of cross.

    What do you all reckon??

    Cheers

    Dave

That is very interesting. Obviously, as you have pointed out, if it was a RK, the ring would be integral to the frame. Here is appears to be soldered on top. Can you see a seam on top of the ring? Also, as you hve already pointed out, there is a mark in the frame where the EK2 ring used to be. It must be an ubergrosse cross that someone messes with. Do you have specific dimensions and weights? Thanks

No Tom, it is one piece and is soldered onto the frame.

I can't see where the EK2 ribbon ring was attached,it seems that the solder was "wiped" across when the "RK" ring was added. The specific dimensions are noted above on my original post, the weight I have no idea but it does feel slightly lighter than a standard RK.

Thanks Dave. Looks like an altered ubergrosse cross.

I agree with Tom, however IMO it's period done.

I wouldn't expect anyone to mess ubergrosse given their rarity & value.

Dave, can you give us a better look at the ribbon?

Sorry Roy but I have returned the cross to my friend and didn't take any pics of the ribbon. It was very worn especially around were the loop hangs and was also grubby..........it didn't glow under blacklight!

BTW does anyone have an idea on value for this sort of converted Ubergrosse "RK"?...........taking into account the lack of provenance.
