Maker reverse?

Extremey interesting piece. I wouldn’t dare to put a maker on it so far. P&L was far too early to produce army flak badges. When you can also rule out Schickle for the same reason i would put my money on Deschler… knowing they had a very different design in their latest combat awards (think about the L/10 and prototype designs) and share the same pin on their ek1’s

It is a design never seen before but the reverse looks so good and resembles some other makers that I want to be open to it.

Does this variant have a name yet? From the pictures 'Puppet Head' might suit it

True, the Flak badge was instituted in July, 1941 -- the same month P&L and Schickle were "disbarred" by the PK.

No, I believe they retooled before the license was pulled.

Schickle's early pieces are notoriously poor quality, and also ugly. Think about their one-piece Schinkel EKs, or their hideous first attempt at a (2. Pattern) SP1. Then they have a series of later incarnations of the same awards, often marked L/15: three piece magnetic EKs with a very handsome design, an SP1 with a mean bird and sleek lines. Same story with Wound Badges. I can supply images of all these things if needed.

I don't know exactly why or when they retooled, but I've speculated privately that they were warned to step up their game and I'd guess around 1940.

It would never surprise me to see two different patterns of any given award attributed to Schickle: one early and ugly, and one midwar and quite nice.
