So as I sift through all the annoying sarcasm here, am I to understand that the consensus is that this is a good Spanish Cross that has been painted to look as relic condition?

don't know why it was painted, but yes, she's authentic.

If I've been at all sarcastic, I meant it... Please be advised I am prone to expressing my beliefs. There is a button for you to avoid ever reading mine or anyone else's posts that you find so offensive to your thin skinned sensibilities. It's a "for some reason" messed up, painted piece of history that's been abused. Painted it appears. But I haven't done a chemical analysis so can only surmise. So yes, abused crap. Once you dip that in a chemical to remove the paint it will really be a mess. But there are also those on the forum prone to dipping awards, so not entirely without value to everyone.

I said I was annoyed, NOT offended. Please don't let this "messed up, painted piece of history that's been abused" ruin your weekend. Enough with the drama, I am just trying to learn.

My curiosity has to do with the finish -- what conditions would turn Tombac black like that?
Hi Scott,
I noted the "black" "finish" and assumed it was the remnants of an originally silver (or bronze)-plated finish on a tombak badge, rather than some sort of recent paint attempt or alteration of the tombak itself. 60 years of exposure can to weird things and the generally cold climate where it is alleged to have ben found would have to be taken into account too.
Personally, I hope the new owner does NOT attempt to clean it as I feel they would be stripping the remainder of the original finish.

Mike
