That is a post war grand cross by Souval- shame about the poor condition as it's still a scarce item and also worth a bit of money

Indeed a postwar Grand Cross made by Souval.
I would assume bad storage, core started rusting and some-one over-painted it.
Too bad - in good nick they can fetch a nice penny ... this condition, would assume less then half

It's even one of the more rare silver frame (stamped 800) Grand Crosses.
They were available with silver and non-silver frame. Then of course there were the exotic variants...

                Best regards,
                Alex

I agree with all of the above that this is a post war Souval Grand Cross in very poor condition. Having said that these are made of decent materials and, since it is a fake, IMO it would be worth restoring. I would have someone strip the old paint off the core and repaint it with a matt enamel using an airbrush and clean up the silver frame. I think this could become a very attractive piece and collection filler again with little effort.

                    Hi guys,

Do we have an idea of when Souval started producing these?

                    Thanks

                    Tom
If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

Paint stripper will remove the awful paint and you can remove the rust easily enough and repaint the core. The frame will not suffer from this and will polish up nicely, but I would probably leave it as you'll start to remove the detail. That's a restoration. Otherwise I would probably just remove the rust with a little Blue and Rust remover using a cotton tip rather than splashing the stuff around everywhere and just leave it as it. This one is screaming out for some care. You're lucky to have it. I'd love one of these, but they're out of reach for me. Congrats on getting hold of it.

It depends on how much you want to spend on restoration. A jeweller would do a professional job but it wont be as cheap as doing it yourself. Having said that it's worth the extra cost if you would rather not risk making a bad job of it. You could at least take it to a jeweller and get some advice. It's worth it in the end as you have a scarce and very desirable award, even if it is post war.
