Knight's Cross from Vet, Maker Identification

Today was my lucky day. Along with my father, I have been collecting military items since February 1974. One piece that has always eluded me is a Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross). On December 16, 2013, the 69th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, a newspaper in my area featured two veterans of the Bulge with their wartime souvenirs. Among the items one of the veterans brought back as a souvenir was a Ritterkreuz. I immediately wrote to the veteran (he's now 88 years old), a member of the U.S. 8th Armored Division, telling him of my interest, and today he called to offer it to me. I interviewed him for an hour and a half and took many photos and some video.

I asked him how he acquired the Ritterkreuz. He said he was marching into Germany at the end of the war and a column of captured German soldiers was passing by on the same road under guard. The veteran told me he walked up to the POWs and saw the award around one soldier's necks and took it from the German because it looked unique to him. I asked him if the German soldier had any reaction, and he said, "No, he didn't - like all the other German soldiers in the group, he was simply glad the war was over."

As mentioned, I have always wanted a Ritterkreuz, but never imagined I would acquire one directly from a veteran. I am also thrilled that it is an issued and worn example - if only I knew who it belonged to!

I would like to know if you Ritterkreuz experts, especially my friend Dietrich Maerz, can tell me more about this example. As you can see, it's a pristine example with only slight wear. The Ritterkreuz is marked "800" and the ring is marked "935". My main question is, "Who is the maker?"

I am looking forward to everyone's input.

    Barry

Here are two photos taken by the newspaper photographer a day or two before the article appeared in the paper on December 16, 2013.

Wow, that seems like a really lucky hit, congratulations.

I'm just curious (in a case like this), was he aware what the decoration was and its significance? If not, did you tell him?

Just wondering so when I run across a vet with a Knight's Cross I'll know how to correctly handle the situation.

          Great start to 2014

That would be my question too. How would one know how much to pay to the vet?

About $130. That's how much an EK II runs isn't it?

                Are you kidding, right?

                $130 for a KC?

No, that is $130 if you tell the Vet it is an EKII. I'm not saying that is what I would do, or that is what Stormfighter did. I'm sure he explained what a Ritterkreuz is and was honest and offered him fair market value for it.

Here's a link to the original article that led to the purchase.

In my letter to the veteran, I told him the medal was worth "thousands." When he called me today, he told me what he wanted for it and I told him I was willing to pay that amount. Before I wrote him, he had no idea about its value. When I visited him today, I brought along an E.K. II and an E.K. I. I told him their values and said I was willing to pay his "high" price because his cross was much more rare. Trust me, I didn't steal it and I gave the veteran a very good price.

Like I said earlier, I'm sure you were honest and gave him fair payment. I think it is a great piece and it is nice to see stuff like this is still out there. Great find once again

Well done!!.... the Vet certainly enjoyed having it for over 70 yrs...What a pity we don't know who the German soldier was ....I remember reading a story about Hans Rudel landing on an american airfield and a GI try to grab his KC with diamonds from his neck and he got his ass kicked by Rudel... after all, is the highest military award .....

It's a very nice Steinhauer & Lück "micro 800" (the silver mark) Ritterkreuz.

                            Congratulations!

Thanks everyone. I'd like to get to my question - who's the maker of this Ritterkreuz?
