    Tang,

I think that info is in "The Iron Time" by Previtera. I am in the office and don't have a copy on hand. If no one posts the info I will check when I get home.

Off the top of my head I think 27 females won/were awarded the EK 2.

The names I can only think of one, and see the pic of the nurse in my head.

      Hanna Reitsch being the pilot.

Reitsch and Ilse Grossmann are the only EK1 winers that I know of. Reitsch was both a genius pilot and a bit of a party loony...

can someone explain to me how the nurses ended up with the Iron Cross?

shouldn't they be awarded the War Merit Cross instead ? what did they do to get the EK?

                          Ian,

They would stay with soldiers while under fire in medical facilities or in the field or come under fire while moving prisoners. I certainly think that is bravery warranting an EK2!

Absolutely ... considering most of the brass high tailed it out of the zone of fire as fast as possible
