                What core does the Souval frame carry? The three is not dipping (or is that just the angle of the camera?).

                  Isn't the brown LDO case for an KVK2? I can't remember ever seeing an EK2 housed in this type of case.

                    Let's not confuse the EK2 core with the dipping 3 in the postwar Souval RK cores. As far as I know, no conclusions can be drawn from the presence of a dipping 3 in a Souval EK2 core.

                    I agree with you. An LdO directive called "Unified Order Packaging" and dated 1.3.1941 states in part:

                    ...from 1st March 1941 duplicates of orders and medals instituted after 30 January 1933 may only be delivered for commercial sale in wrappings and packagings approved by the LdO...the symbol of the LdO is to be used on all...:

                    2. Halbetui I, black: for EK II Class;
                    3. Halbetui II, brown: for KVKII with and without swords, Police Service Decoration I and II Class, and Customs Decoration;
                    4. Halbetui III, blue: for Long Service Decoration I and II Class and Special Class, Fire Service Decoration, Honor Cross of the German Mother I, II, and III Class
                    Now, what someone may have done in their own home with their own medals... who knows? This guys labeled the case with his EK2 award date (assuming the writing is period, which I can't judge), so I guess it makes sense that he stored the cross there, although it doesn't quite fit.
                    Best regards,

                        Hi Streptile I was referring to the Souval EKI pictured above not the post war RK or an EKII. I note in the Souval frames thread that the dipping 3 core was just one of those used in wartime Souval EKIs and so was wondering which one this core was. I've only seen a few wartime examples on here that don't have the dipping 3 so want to know what to look for.

                          Hi Tony. Sorry, I said EK2 when I meant EK1 but I believe the cores were the same in both classes. As far as I know, the sole attempt to categorize Souval's cores includes one that is not by Souval, and misses some that are. So a system for naming (or numbering) them is still unrealized. I think some people get confused because Souval's postwar RKs have a dipping-3, which is used as a sign to ID them as postwar. But no one has ever made a case that all dipping-3 EK cores are also postwar (or wartime).
                          Best regards,
                          Streptile
