    EK2 '13' & '800' marked

    Hello,

    I've this Gustav Brehmer 13 marked cross. The cross is clearly a Gustav Brehmer piece in very good condition.
    The ring does however also show a '800' silver marking. I can't find another example like this. Does someone have seen this before?
    I bought it from one of my pickers with some other medals/badges. No dealer/collector who tries to increase the value.

    How strange, well it certainly doesnt belong on any EK2.

            IMO the [800] mark was added sometime postwar to enhance the price of the cross. We all know this maker didn't use silver in his frame halves.

              Was an 800 fine silver EK2 version not listed in the Assmann wartime catalog forsale as an option?

                I have an Assmann catalogue but it only lists their 1914 EKs in the actual price section, and then only "real silver" rather than an actual fineness. There may be another, later Assmann catalogue I'm unaware of though.

                  Real silver 1939 EK2s are totally unknown in my experience, except as B-Type and some Übergröße (incl. Little Brother) examples -- and even these are very rare to find in real silver. Here's one:

                    I find it somewhat strange, that every single mark that does not fit in the usual theories seems to be "postwar" added to enhance the value.

                    To me the 800 mark does looks legit. Why it is on there, is another question...

                      I've received EKII's from dealers (one imparticular comes to mind) such as a marked [3] Deumer only to find an additional [800] mark on the ring, which was not included in the description. One could clearly see that the silver plating on the rims of the frame corners was worn off, and the base metal exposed, which was not silver. It looked like neusilber. I had to conclude that the base metal was not silver because why layer a silver plating onto a silver base metal frame? You see my point?

                        Interesting assumption that the 800 stamp on the ring has any meaning for the cross frames. The stamp is on the ring. For all we know, this could be an old stock 800 stamped ring that Bremer added their "13" stamp to.

                            Easy way to tell is to test the ring to see if it is genuine silver.

                            We know for certain that dealers added spurious marks to enhance value. A silver mark would certainly enhance the value, so I find it very plausible that it is an added mark.

                            Mike's scenario is also quite possible, and I agree that the mark itself looks legitamate (deeply struck, good placement, etc.).

                              I guess a gold Smith could easily test the ring, to see if it indeed was silver.
                              And I am rather sure, that that test is not very expensive, to be made.
