    EK1/Boerger 1st pattern spange combo

Would welcome any observations/comments on this combo. No markings but from my two beer research on spanges it appears to utilize a Boerger 1st Pattern Spange. The EK is also unmarked. I would like to learn what I can before I jump on this. Thanx in advance, RC

          combo

Rick, I believe the spange is a fake. Notice the softness of the chest feathers and lack of veins in said feathers. Also, the pebbling in the date box is soft and there is very little pebbling within the 9. But wait to see what others say. Jim

            Hi Rick,

That's one I'd want to inspect very carefully in-hand before committing to it. The patina looks good and even, but this is possible to fake very well. The pin looks too close to some well-known fake EK pins, even though it's a longer length. The Spange looks soft. The core rust looks new.

If I had to make a final decision based on these pics, I would pass.
            Best regards,

Here's some closer shots which I hope aids in the analysis. For whatever it's worth (which isn't much based on the 'rare skull' thread on the SS forum) this is being offered to be by a guy in Massachusetts who purchased it from Bill Shea some ten years ago.

Here's a composite photo with an alleged confirmed L/57 spange and the one under discussion below it.

                      combo

In your last pictures you can see the differences between the spanges - feathers are not complete on the first one you posted and do not have veins, the pebbling is also soft. I would not buy as I still say it is a fake. Jim

For me it's simply one to judge in-hand. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I agree with the Jim on this one.
I also think that the details looks wrong on the spange. Pebbling soft, weird "Wear" on chest and shoulders.

And just out of cusiosity, why would the back of the frame of the EK be bent?

If you look at the 3 o'clock arm, when viewed from the back, you can see that the frame is bent.

I know the frame is splitting, but that does not explain the bending of the frame.

Could the softness in the chest feathers be due to wear?

Here is a Boerger EK1 1st pattern combo with a similar chest.

                              Regards,
