    Deschler Hoard Book Project

    Hello Everyone,

I am embarking on what will prove to be a difficult journey, I am writing a book. It will be on the subject of the Deschler Hoard find. I would like to think I'm a good writer , however with such few resources I have seen on this subject it will most likely be harder. This will not stop me though and I am going to do my best

Anyone with knowledge and people wanting to contribute please contact me.

    Thanks everyone!

        Hi,

i applaud everone who wants to write a book about a subject that is important to them (and possibly the collectorworld too), but...there are some very suspicious things going on with that "hoard" and it seems not everything that shines is pure gold. Certain items that were credited as coming from that hoard are by some of the (largest) dealers selling them suddenly called differently (First they were hoard items, now they are special presentation pieces e.g), also i was at Weitzes shop a few years ago and they only had a handfull kvk crosses left, a few months later they suddenly had more then ever before and all with cases and outer carboard packages. Strange or not? Maybe they rediscovered a few hundred more they had forgotten...?

What probably every collector would like to see is if there are any inventory lists from Deschler from the 50s/60s/70s/et cetera up till now to check if all those hundreds of kvks, mothers crosses, cases and many prototypes are indeed from that hoard and not massive stocks of "other items" that are added to the hoard?

It could be a very interesting project to research and gather pictures of, many items are one of a kind (IF all Original!). I also wonder if it will be possible to gather pictures and information on all items as many have long ago been sold to silent collectors that are not on WAF. Do you think it is possible to get pictures of all those items for a book?

I wish you a lot of luck and patience, it is an interesting subject that will probably speak to many collectors.

        best regards,
        Gaston

ps: i have one item that i think is unique and that comes from the hoard, i'd love to find out if anything more on it's background can be dug up!

I agree, it would make an interesting subject.

I would suggest that if you want to write something valuable you should approach it like a detective story. There are a lot of unanswered questions about that find so you will likely not be able to just gather research on the internet and collate it into a book. I'd say some working knowledge of German and a trip to Germany, or a German collaborator, would be a must.

Also, I think an article might be better. Is there really enough material for a book?

Anyway, good luck. It'll be very interesting to see what you uncover.
          Best regards,
          Streptile

            Hello Gatson,

Thanks for the information! I have heard different stories about the hoard and how some stuff seemed a little odd according to some people. I will be approaching this project with caution and never will be assuming things

If you have something from the hoard I would be happy to see it and if you would allow maybe I could put it in the book/article (whichever it turns out to be)

            Thanks again!

              Hello streptile,

You are right there is hardly anything about the find besides "stories" and what is on this forum from other members. An article might end up being a smarter idea and I like the thought of how you suggest to approach it, I would love to visit Germany again! I spent about 4 years there as a kid, I was able to go back and visit in 2009.

My thoughts as well. Not that the story would be short by any means, but the amount of information you are likely able to uncover will be limited to say the least.

As others say regarding the uncovering information: yes, it will be hard, unless you can manage to contact Deschler themselves?

Regarding material for a book: i can easily think of several hundreds of pages with more or less unique items. We see all the time incredible bad books in this hobby with almost only photo's, why not on this subject? Not a bad book i mean, but a book filled with many interesting photo's? All the so-called prototypes alone would fill many pages (front and backpicture of each!), the packets, the hoard find with the boxes, some pictures from whows where the hoard is first shown/offered, et cetera. And then add every piece of information you can get? I don't see why this would be any less "quality" than many of the Schiffer or Bender books? Regarding material there is so very much to show!!!! The crux here is as said the finding of information, you need to find someone who is "willing to talk", an insider, and i would NOT trust any dealer on his blue eyes to tell the truth!

                    best regards,
                    Gaston

                      Hi Knight_ridergta
The only advice i can give you, is that you must be impartial. I mean you have to weigh up the negative as well as the positive. If you are going to dedicate a book, or long article, to this "supposed occurrence" then you have to take into account the actual people who discovered this hoard, and their reputations. This forum is a great place to start, with many threads still around, that mention this this very hoard-finder, attempting to pull the wool over the collectors eyes. Here is one such thread, and there are, more!

                      http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...generals+tunic

And bear in mind that almost everyone, on every forum, OWNS a piece from the supposed Deschler Hoard, so you will be very limited as to what you could actually say about it, without causing mayhem.

If it is, just a picture book that you want to create, then why not, i am sure that those who own a piece from this hoard will be glad to have further confirmation that the hoard is real, and all the items are too, in-print!

What you will need to do though, is make it clear to the reader that you were not actually there, and are merely relating images and words from other people, as they were told to you - other people who financially profited, and continue to, from this occurrence. Just in case things go belly-up in a few years and it turns out that the hole thing was a hoax. That way you will be covering all bases.

Please don't forget to add the COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL FOR SPANISH VOLUNTEERS a.k.a the blue division medal to the list of medals coming from this horde

                          Discoloration of my 'hoard'KVK's

For what its worth: I own two pieces from the hoard, a KVK 1st class with swords and a KVK 1st class without. Both were shining new when they arrived.
After keeping them in a safe place, away from light and fresh air, they still started to slightly change color, developing spots and areas that show some kind of 'oily' discoloration. A couple of month ago, I put both in a display cabinet. Discoloration has greatly worsened since. In view of the fact that these medals were abolutely mint when discovered some 60 years after production, I'm greatly surprised by the relatively rapid deterioration I observe on my two pieces. Even taking into account that a display cabinet or closed box may not be the optimum place to store these medals.

                          Greetings,

                          Marcel
