    EK 1 L/54 - Repainted ?

    Hi,
got this EK 1 L/54. At closer inspection in encountered many paint on the inner frame and after the scanning i can see a color difference at the black paint. What´s your opinion regarding the black paint ? Was it repainted ?
    Thanks
    Alex

    I don't think so.

For me the EK1 is OK and has the original paint from the maker.

It looks like its been washed at some point to get rid of dust. I would imagine that the inner beading has started to develop some nice dark patina, perhaps from not having been dried properly. The colour difference around the outer core area is merely the remains of some of the dirt/ dust not lifted from the washing process.

Just a guess. It looks a very nice EKI

You'll find out that some EK makers painted or touched-up their cores after they were completely assembled. At one time I had an abundance of EKII's in my collection and it was really revealing to see how many makers actually did this.

Your cross looks just fine. In fact it's a real beauty.

In the new Deschler booklet there's a pic of crosses being re-painted after assembly.
I had a have / had a number of ek's with paint on the inner ribbing, but none of those were touched up or recently repainted.

So paint on the frame is not always a bad sign

I too have some crosses with painting retouched in the factory, and sometimes they are in very good condition, I think it was been not to cover damages but just to obtain what they believed to be a mint cross

To me, it looks like the paint is missing from the edge of the core.
So what I see, is the core without paint, and then there comes a little ridge, where the original paint starts/not removed.

                  Does this makes sence?

                    Hi!
Take an earswab moisten it with a little Acetone wipe it on some of the paint to see if you get paint on it, if so then repainted , In my opinion all the iron cross is "fire painted" and will not dissolve by Acetone!

                    Best Regards
                    Martin
