There was more than just one Grand Cross and that is a fact. Documented by the Präsidialkanzlei and verified through Klessheim. One can read this in good books and relevant articles. To avoid such serious and informed sources and only relying on dubious Internet sites and Facebook comments results in very revealing statements.

I should imagine that Rommel would have been awarded a Grand Cross had the campaign in North Africa been successful?

Rommel thought the medal(Grand Cross) vulgar or so David Irving alleged in his book about Rommel. Rommel was dismayed at 'this bloated six star general' when he met Goring. Another line from an Irving book, probably invention or supposition on Irving's part.
I had also thought that Dietrich was awarded the diamonds to his Knight's Cross with oakleaves and swords?
