    WWII Iron Cross Reference Books

    Good Evening,

Can someone recommend a reference book (or books) that would be considered 'the best source currently available' for identifying the various makers of WWII era Iron Cross medals?

Thank you for your time and trouble.

    Bill

Dietrich Maerz + George Stimson The Iron Cross 1. Class of 1939, or Frank Thater Das Eiserne Kreuz 1. Klasse von 1939 (in German).

For 2. Class EKs, you're out of luck. Study the forum threads or post for opinions.
    Best regards,

I obtained a copy of the book The Iron Cross 1st Class by Maerz & Stimson and I was overwhelmed. This is a 'must have' book for anyone collecting the Iron Cross awards.

        Thanks again for the recommendation.

I was able to locate a copy of The Iron Cross of 1939 by Gordan Williamson that is currently out of print. I should receive sometime next week.

Collecting Iron Cross's is almost as interesting as collection Luger's (my main area of interest). Having the right reference books makes collecting a lot more interesting and a lot safer ($$$$).

I think you will find the information in that book a bit dated.

Check this thread for information on books also (that thread really needs to be updated; there are a lot of new additions that aren't in there, especially Wernitz and Thater)
                Best regards,

                  Hi Bill

Trevor is correct in saying that book is out of date now. Still there is some useful information in there.

The problem for a novice with every dated book, no matter the topic or author, is how to realize which information is outdated or wrong, which items shown are fakes? How would he know that without somebody telling him? Especially when it comes to a book without any reference where the stated information is coming from. No chance to check!
