Hello folks. This is one I posted a while back but would like to have more input. I'm wondering how I can nail down if this is indeed an EARLY post-war example by Souval, as the cross itself it utterly DEVOID of markings, yet shows a lot of legitimate age. It's three pieces, has quite a lot of age crazing to the paint, and is mounted via the oak leaves / sword device, which IS marked on the wire w/ the "800" silver mark. For all intent and purpose, the ribbon itself may be original, especially if it IS indeed an extremely early post-war Souval cross. As it has no maker mark, is there any way I can determine if this IS indeed the case? I've had quite a bit of collector interest in it, which I find a bit odd as it is supposedly a post-war cross, but have, however, in the meantime discovered that there is apparently a good amount of interest in their early post-war RK's. Any additional information would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

KNIGHTS CROSS w/ OAKLEAVES & SWORDS...EARLY P/W SOUVAL OR???

It's indeed a nice Souval post war KC. The OLS and the KC match in terms of Souvals later production pattern. What I'm trying to say is that this KC is not an early post war produced piece at all. It's one of Souvals later produced pieces. The semi hollow OLS, as well as the amount of flaws on the frame indicate this. I don't believe that the ribbon is old left stock. Maybe on an early post war piece, but not a rather late piece like this one.

Interesting Alex, thanks for the add'l interest. So when do you believe this piece would've been made? From the amount of age, I imagined it didn't post-date the war by very much, especially when I consider the source from whence it came, not to mention the other items I acquired with it. Thanks again for commenting!

The characteristics of early and late Souvals are fairly clear. The thing is of course, that the 70s were 40 years ago now, so it will be showing plenty of age whether early or late. The prices seem to range between about $450-$1000 for these sets. Something I'd like to get one day.Last edited by Tony T-S; 02-28-2013, 01:36 AM.

It is a late Souval, probably 1970's (even as late as the late 1970's).
Here is another that was posted a few days ago to compare it with. You will notice the core is the same.

Not a bad looking cross all the same, and ok as a filler.

In case this might help.
I saw this posting and thought this might help some on the dating of the Souval KC. I took this with one of my older Nikon digitals in 2005 (a D100). Unfortunately these were all the shots I took, and I didn't really set anything up....just "threw it down" and shot handheld.....so it is blurry and etc.. I also don't remember exactly when I got it from Herr Umlauf, but it had to be at the earliest in the mid to late 60s and at the latest in the early 70s, prior to 1973 when I went back into the army and went to Germany with the 8th ID. I had ordered it from Souval's and Herr Umlauf, who headed the company, to use as a display piece on a uniform I had back then. I can't quite make out from the photos the marking on it...whether it is L/58 or L/5?. Although I still have it somewhere, with all the different workmen I have had working on my room and with all the moving of stuff they have done, I have no earthly idea where it is to take better photos of it. Sorry.....however I am certain of where I sent the money for it, and where the return address on the package it came to me in.....Rudolf Souval KG, Siebensternegasse, Vienna, Austria (don't have the package any longer). When I went to Vienna to visit the shop, and gained access to the "special room" upstairs and to Herr Umlauf, one of the reasons I was permitted up there was the fact I had ordered the cross. Herr Umlauf told me what my address was in West Virginia.....he kept very good records as I recall.

Very interesting, and I have to say, it looks VERY close to my cross...especially the suspension loop..almost a twin. Mine is devoid of any markings, however, w/ the exception of the "800" silver mark on the ribbon loops soldered to the oak leaves...I truly appreciate all of the extra information, and for anyone interested, I've put my example up for sale on the e-stand "bazaar" section. Thanks again for all the help!
