Great thread. I guess the 57 awards are drying up like everything else especially since production stopped in 1988. Not to change the subject, BUT does anyone know a source for WWII Chinese medals awarded to US forces? I fear these will be more rare than the 57 awards.

The concept of proving entitlement before being able to actually wear an award is a logical one, but collectors have believed for many years that anyone wishing to obtain a 1957 piece had to prove entitlement to it.
I have had friends in the Bundeswehr pick me up 1957 pieces through their Kleiderkasse which they clearly had no entitlement to and they were able to do it without problem.
The fact that any old Tom Dick or Harry can walk into a retail outlet and buy medals cannot help but denigrate the status of the award. In the UK replacements ( of course fakes, copies and miniatures for dress wear are freely available) cannot be bought this way. Ordering them through official sources takes ages and can be expensive, cheaper in fact to go to a medal dealer and buy an original if is an unnamed type.
