War Merit Cross - Single Mount

This is a single mount KVK2 without swords I picked up.

Although tough to tell from the photo it has the remains of a copper coloured wash.

The wash has faded over the years in a few areas.

I think that this cross is either bronze or tombak but I'm having a trouble determining what it is for sure.

Zink shows grey once the original coating fades but this cross is turning a chocolate colour where the wash has disappeared.

Any way to tell for sure what it is made of?

A very nice mounted KVK. Not sure how you can tell but it certainly is an early one.
