KC refered to as Dödel during WWII

    Hi Guys,

today I read in a book about JG 77 a pilot refering to the KC as the Dödel. Does anyone know how this reference came about? By the way the word Doedel also means dick in German. Quite interesting I thought.

    Cheers, W

I heard that also but that the word dödel means penis is new for me (and german is my mother's tongue). Maybe thats the case for the northern part of germany.

After doing some searching around it appears the term was applied to a number of things including but not limited to; the Knight's Cross, V-1 rocket and the Werfer-Granate 21 rocket launcher.

        Interesting.

Sort of along the lines of "neck nads".

Interesting. Would that mean it was a sort of slang for a big thing, like say the big banana (staying within the phallic reference)? Something like the big banana would fit a rocket or granade but less so a KC. So maybe when refering to the KC as just the big one or something like it. Anyone?

I never heard of a V1 being referred to as Dödel - it was a Doodle Bug.
But with regard to the Dödel itself. Wen you translate Dödel it actually means a thing hanging on - not mentioned in the dictionaries back then as such, but known to many as the male genitales. And hence the KC became known as such - a thing hanging on - which simply translated into the fact, that being a German pilot with a lot of free time in some parts of the world, his KC would give all the advantages as such - not only a reserved table in front of the stage....well, anyone will understand what I mean. The ladies were standing in line, just to be seen with a KC pilot was a dream of many. The rest you can fill in yourself - meaning that some only did that besides flying ! And perhaps have a drink or two as well...
I also got the impression by interviewing some pilots that this was only custom in the Luftwaffe to refer to the Dödel".

"Dödel" also means "idiot / fool", or is used to describe something that is big - either unnaturally big, or bigger than its necessary.

                        This sounds pretty convincing.
