The numbers signify the manufacturer of a spesific cross. Some crosses have a mark and others don't. Germans had a very strick quality controll over iron crosses during ww2 and each firm that had a government contract to produce iron crosses had a Lieferantennummer to mark it's product. A simple numeric code. For example "65" is the mark of Klein und Quenzer of Idar Oberstein. Some company's also had the license to manufacture crosses for retail sails for replacement, uniform outfitter's shops and so on. For this purpose company's had a LdO number or Leistungsgemeinschaft deutscher Ordenshersteller. This mark has a prefixed "L" letter. So, Juncker of Berlin has "2" as it's Lieferantennummer and "L/12" as it's LdO mark for retail sales.

So in theory this all should mean that a cross stamped with just a number is one that was awarded during the war and the "L/" mark should signify a cross made for just retail sales. In reality these two types intermixed during the war, so in some cases a number is just as good as the "L/" mark. Fakes is another matter offcourse, but studying will help you there aswell as asking alot of questions in the forum.
