Born April 22, 1023 in Wiese Graflich (now Lake Prudnicka, Poland), Kreis Neustadt/Upper Silesia. He was serving in the 9th (Tiger) Company Panzer Regiment “Grossdeutchland” on August 6, 1944 when he was awarded the German Cross in Gold as an Unteroffizier and most probably Tank Commander.
The details are heavily scored into the reverse of this German Cross and Iron Cross “KANIA FW 14 381” (surname Kania, rank Feldwebel, and field post number for 13th Company, Grossdeutchland Panzer Regiment as from July 15, 1943 and 9th Company GD Pz Rgt. As from August 21, 1944). The German Cross was manufactured by Deschler & Sohn, Munich, and has had the hinge repaired.
