Abused DK/German Cross in Silver

Here is what I believe to be a period original German Cross in Silver, which has sadly and ingloriously been used in the construction of a nonetheless rather unique piece of "trench art".

This item must have been put together by one of our boys - Canadian or American. Being an award with the status of a German Cross, I sure cannot imagine a German having made and/or used something like this for butting out a cigarette or cigar on one of the highest awards that the Reich could confer!

Knowing very little about artillery shells, I have posted this item showing the markings in the Ordnance Forum for identification (see here: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...=1#post5490824

Well, if that is the case, it sure makes me feel a lot better than had an original one been used! Still, a pretty unique item.

Seems like the mfgr wasn't a fool after all. Probably made it into an ashtray when he couldn't
get his money back.

I too am glad this is not an original DKIS subjected to the task of extinguishing cigars and cigarettes.
