      If that EK was awarded the 27th of September 1939, why would the core be modified after less then 4 weeks of use?

        It may be the date he qualified for the EK, or was approved for the EK (is the award document available?); not necessarily the day he received the actual medal. He may have received the medal days, weeks, or even months later.
