    Awards of Heinrich Schroeteler

    Hello all

I'm curious on your thoughts about the group of awards for sale on the estand from Heinrich Schroeteler.

    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ht=Schroeteler

Do we think this group looks legitimate?

What are your thoughts on the converted EK?

Does this look like a converted EK in this picture:

Any thoughts or info would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Matt

I thought the cross he is wearing in that photo has been drawn in, he was awarded in the last weeks of the war and probably never got a real KC and so the converted one would make sense?

I kinda fancy this group, but without any solid provenance, the asking price is too high

This is the kind of group that would immediately become exceptional if a photo of the man emerged wearing these awards. They are so distinctive. Failing that, or some other kind of documentation or provenance, they are what they are....kind of rough examples of some awards and medals with a too-high asking price.

I really do like this group though...it has an authentic look to it for some reason, especially the ribbon. I like how the material used to make the eye appears to have been used on the hook as well. Was it made onboard a Uboat?...Another oddity I suppose is the Heer DKiG. I know KM personnel occasionally ended up in Fledgrau toward the very end of the war...but. Again, a photo of him wearing these awards would be HUGE.

                  Hello all

                  Thanks for the replies.

My thoughts were very similar - an interesting looking group that could turn out to be something special.

I've spoken more to the seller and have done some research. My thoughts have moved from possible to plausible and I decided to buy the group.

If you look at Herr Schroeteler's last days of the war he was awarded his RK on May 2 in Norway. I have not been able to locate any pictures or reference to him actually receiving an RK before he set out on his patrol the next day.
Herr Schroeteler's last patrol ended seven days later on May 10 when he surrendered U1023 in the British port of Weymouth. Herr Schroeteler was then imprisoned for three years.

It is possible he never received his RK and in such an event it would not be out of the question for him or his crew to convert an EKII to be worn 'in the field' until the formal RK presentation. With the ending of hostilities and his imprisonment he may very well have never received his RK at all.

The only way to know for certain would be for an attributed RK to surface or confirmation from comrades or family. I'll keep looking an hope I get lucky!

Thanks again for the replies and if anyone has more information on Herr Schroeteler or the fate of his awards I would like to know (especially the fate of his DKiG which was sold separatly from the other awards).

                  Matt
