    "Oakleaves"

Hello, I recently come by an Oakleave piece. I don't know if it's the real thing or not. There is only one mark on the back, a half moon stamp with another small mark above this. I have read, quoted from Robin Lumsden's, A Collector's guide to Third Reich Militaria; "The holder was permitted to purchase duplicate silver Oakleaves and these were in the main constructed as per the presentation piece, although a few cheaper varieties made from solid, silver-plated brass or whitened zinc appeared late in the war." unquote. I think my Oakleaves may be one of these. I can see that mine is indeed silver-plated brass by the colours. The back does appear to be silver, I will post a few photo's if needed. It came from an auction with a WW1 pin included. Regards, Helene

    Hello Helene,

    welcome to the forum!

It is only half correct what Mr. Lumsden was writing in his 1987 book.

Awardees of the Oakleaves were allowed to buy as many replacements as they whised, that is true, But from October 1941 on only directly from the Präsidialkanzlei.
Before that time they could buy from private retailers and some awardees surely did so. The makers of these "unofficial" pieces are (as far as we know today) S&L, Juncker and Deumer.

However, none of them had the old Imperial half moon stamp. At that time, silver pieces were stamped with the content - most likely "800" or "900".

The Lumsden-Statement that "later in the war" silver-plated brass or whitened zinc Oaklevase 'appeared" is completely false and has no basis whatsoever. Only in the time between June 1940 and October 1941 replacement pieces were allowed to be sold privately to the official recipients of this high order.

You should post pictures for better evaluation.

Those type of marks may be ww1, as i believe they had oakleaves in ww1 for the Pour le me rite . (blue max).I'm not sure how that type are marked, but i'm sure once they are posted ,the type they could be ,or are, will be clear.

            Oakleaves?

Hi, Can someone let me know if the image came though. I am having trouble finding the 'Manage Attachments' button, all i can see is an icon 'insert image' and that doesn't seem to let me browse my photos. Oh boy, this is frustrating.

Or if you have photobucket or another image hoster you can place images directly into the thread, they just won't be saved here, but we'll be able to see them

Now we need the front. (The loop, by the way, is incorrectly mounted and shears to the left of center, something you can readily see when the photo is rotated to the correct position.)

                      oakleaves

Thanks to Andy B for downloading my photos. Yes, Leroy i know the pin is to the left. I can tell that the loop has been re-soldered, as in holding the piece you can see were it was in the centre before. It measures 19mm x 20mm and weighs 6.9gms. It is probably a repro. As i could not be that lucky. thanks guys. Helene.

Appears to be a copy made from an S&L piece.
