Good info. Is the acid process a bit like gun bluing?

Well Tony ...... not quite the same ...the surface is resistant to rusting but for totaly different reasons .
Blu-ing is a very thin oxidation of the top metal surface only .
Acid blackning : actualy the top metal surface gets eaten away/disolved -unevenly- by the acid and where a black oxid remains . Example of this use can be seen on SA and SS dagger logos etcing .
2nd picture bit hard to see ... the rough surface left behind after the acid treatment . To get any design/logo the metal is covered with wax... and only the exposed area gets eaten away !

      Cheers, Douglas
