What is a good way to identify a EK2 class with no makers mark?

The only way (and not always the easiest) is to compare to known marked examples and look for specific frame and core characteristics. With time and practice you will be able to recognise the more common manufacturers reasonably easy.

You cross looks like a Klein & Quenzer to me.
