That is what I thought originally - Order of the Red Eagle perhaps

I thought it might be that but I cannot see the eagles between the crosses.

          I was thinking this one

I should have said that the image is of Paul Gustav Völckers and his list of decorations is as follows:

          Iron Cross (1914)
          2nd Class
          1st Class

          Cross of Honor
          Iron Cross (1939)
          2nd Class
          1st Class

          Eastern Front Medal
German Cross in Gold (1 April 1942)
Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross
          Knight's Cross on 11 December 1942 as Generalleutnant and commander of 78. Infanterie-Division .

              I don't think it's a Red Eagle Order. Maybe a non-German award?

Also, his Iron Cross awards would have been Spangen if he won both classes of the 1914 Iron Cross.

Was there a Bulgarian award similar to this? I don't have my books to hand...?

Yes, the Order of St. Alexander. That was my thought also. Does it hang low enough for there to be a crown under the collar and in the shadows?

Judging by the picture furnished, No, can you possibly enhance the original pic?

Looks like a high grade of the Hungarian Order of Merit.

Still looks to me like the Hungarian Order of Merit, which came with or without swords.
