I've no experience with KC's, but is it OK to find dirt all around the swas like in this pic ?

Looks like plain old dust to me.

Yes why shouldn't a RK get dusty like everything else, it all depends on how you handle/store it i guess.

I have a small brush I use for that specific purpose when I buy dirty/dusty crosses ...not RK though, haven't got any of them yet
