War Merit Cross 1st class w/o swords

    Hi guys,

I recently bought this cross on the e-stand and was wondering if anyone could tell me the maker? I did post on another forum and it was thought to be an S&L however no one was positive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks very much!

    Kirby Bletcher

    No thoughts anyone?

I did PM the seller and he said it was an early S&L.

If anyone has any other thoughts or can tell me any more about it I really appreciate it.

    Thanks

    Kirby

      Help

Can someone please give me a hand with this one? I'm beginning to worry its not a good badge being that know one has commented on it. Did I buy a bad one?

      Thanks

If you posted a photo of the pin in the closed position it would help.

        Thanks

          Hello Kirby,

you did not buy a "bad one".
As said in my PM, it is a early S&L

I found the thread I made a few month back:

          I hope that helps.

              Alex,

That help out a bunch! I really didn't doubt you I just got a bit of a bad vibe when know one responded to my post. Any way I really like the cross and thanks again for the great buy.

Do you know what its made from? I'm trying to learn all I can about what I buy or would like to buy. I have the War Merit Cross book by Gordon Williamson on its way.

Mike thanks for speaking up as well.

              Much appreciated guys!

There's something that looks like a S&L cross but it's the first one that I've seen without a "4 "stamped on the pin!

The sheermarks are next plus the color of the cross. I'm not hot about the pebilng and the wreath either but the main issue here imo is the missing mm on the pin.

                  Frank,

The sheer marks are what I was most concerned with. I was always under the impression that sheer marks were strait and then cleaned up a little with what ever abrasive they used. This one was clearly filed at an angle, the proper way to use a file. The War Merit Cross is something new to me as I never really collected them before so I’m learning and can only apply what I’v learned with other badges. I do have a book on the way to hopefully help me on my way.

As for the maker mark as stated earlier this was said to be an early cross so I don’t think it would be a stretch to think the early crosses might not have been marked.

Any way thanks for you input, much appreciated!

                  Kirby
