1871 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross

I have had this 1871 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross in my collection for almost 50 years. It came from a collection that was put together in the 1930's to 1950's. I know that only nine of the 1870 Grand Crosses were awarded so this can't be an awarded medal. Also the awarded medals (as far as I know) were all dated 1870, however, the piece is beautifully made from silver with the center beautifully cast in iron. The piece has the date 1871 and marked "800" across the top arm. I understand the 1870 crosses are "900". The hanger is silver but unmarked. I can't imagine that a faker would make a mistake and use the wrong date when everything else is of such high quality. Is this a museum or display piece or a prototype of some kind?? I am fairly sure that this medal was made prior to or during WWII. What is this medal? Could someone please help me with information?
    Thank you,
    Dick

You should post it down on the Imperial forum since the Crosses Forum is for the 1939 series awards.
