My guess would be to see the progression of the flaw.
Usually, a bigger flaw means a later cross.

PS A early cross could be a later one also, based on the frame type, if you knonw what I mean?

The purpose is as Flemming mentioned - all about that pecurlier flaw that shows up on only some crosses of this frame type which I consider a 2nd W&L frame and possible 3 core . Trying to determin how early this one is .
