    Definition of spange

I know spange is a clasp but I also see it referring to a single parade mounted EK2. Is this correct?

    Spange translated means clasp.

So I don't think you can relate it to a mounted medal.

A clasp usually goes on a ribbon.

    IMHO.

spange can contain more medals then just one. In Germany is typical name Ordensspange for Medal bar..

Yes, Spange in German means "bar" or "clasp." It's the same word for these two things.

Ordenspange is to me referencing a medal bar not a spange as such.

Where spange is used. It's a device that goes on the ribbon.

              I know it's splitting hairs................but.

Das Wort Spange wird im Deutschen recht selten alleine benutzt. (meist als zusammengesetztes Wort wie zb Feldspange)

Spange ist eine gemeine heraldische figur

Spange (Verkehr) ist eine Verbindungsstraße zweier hochrangiger Straßen

                  -Wiederholungspange (clasp)
                  -Ordensspange (medalbar )
                  -Feldspange (fieldbar )

                  -Haarspange usw usw.....

Then I guess they shouldn't be referred to as a spange.

Einzelspange just means, "single Spange," so it's still okay to call it a Spange.

i think this is not 100% correct...

if you talk with someone about a piece (and one cant see it ) and you say ...oh i have a nice EK Spange..... the next question will be....what for a Spange ?

sorry for my bad english...i can better explain it in german :-(

The proper term for a mounted medal bar is "Grossordenspange" or great/large medal bar.

                              Hi Walther,

                              Your English is perfectly understandable

There are about 250,000 words in the English language (estimates vary widely, but this is an accepted figure). We have different words for all kinds of small things that allow us to be very precise in naming and categorizing things. It is one of the most robust vocabularies in history. On the other hand, German has one of the smallest base vocabularies of any major world language (about 130,000 by the same standard used above to measure English). Often words are formed by combining other, smaller words. We see that with "Einzelspange" and "Grosseordenspange," as well as many other words in our collectors' vocabulary. So, while single place medal bars are called "Einzelspangen," and larger ones are called "Grosseordenspangen," the root word of both is still "Spange," which means bar or clasp. The other words are modifiers -- "Grosse," "Einzel," and "Orden." So while it would be perhaps a bit imprecise to call a single mounted EK2 a Spange, I don't think it's wrong.

Maybe Dietrich, fluent in both languages, could weigh in here?
                              Best regards,
