A good looking cross just the way it is. I find the black patina down right sexy!

That is a stunning cross with lots of character that should be left the way it is. Its never going to be minty so why try? I favor beat and rusty crosses over cased and shiny but that's just my druthers... If you MUST mess with it then just gently swab off the clay/dirt. I have an EK1 that was like this when I got it; I cleaned it and regretted it immediately...it just looked like all the others and wasn't unique anymore

I would not clean it. It's not really dirty - messy, and if you or your ancestors change your/their mind, it can be cleaned with water, soap etc., as suggested. But then, it could not be reverted to the same state again. Imagine, maybe in a couple of decades you could simply make an on-line analize of this soil and find god-knows-what about its origin...

I would clean the clay off with soap and water. You don't know what's lurking under there.

Rust? We don't know yet. For all we know it's dirt from Hurricane Kartrina - not North Afrika.

If it was mine that stuff would come off PDQ.
